An elderly Holocaust survivor, Eva was frantic. Because of a steep rent increase, she had fallen behind on paying her rent. Now she had just gotten an eviction notice. She'd lived in her tiny apartment for 25 years. She had no other place to go and she was terrified of ending up in a shelter.
The fear of being turned out of her home was bringing back terrifying nightmares of her horrifying experiences during the war.
In desperation, she called her local Jewish Community Center and poured out her heart.
"I have an idea," the staff member said, "We'll get in touch with The Blue Card. They'll help you."
When the staff member reached us at The Blue Card, the response she got was compassion
and understanding. She was reassured immediately that we would help Eva; that
she would not be evicted.
Eva provided the necessary information and our dedicated Blue Card staff went
to work filling out all the necessary paperwork and making the needed phone calls.
They did a complete review of Eva's financial situation and she was awarded a
monthly rent subsidy to help her make her payments. In addition, all her rent
arrears were paid before the deadline.
Now, each month, a check comes to Eva's mailbox to help pay her rent.
Eva suffered terribly during the Holocaust. Her life has not been easy since then. The least she deserves is to live out her days in dignity in her own home.
That is what The Blue Card has made possible for her.
